Curated by Fanny, Berta

Opening reception: September 20, 6-9pm
At promptly 8 pm, Anna Sophie-Berger will perform Tell Me What To Do with Nouria Behloul

Steve Turner Contemporary is pleased to present What’s Love Got To Do With It?, a group show curated by Isabella Ritter and Katharina Zimmer featuring four Vienna-based artists––Anna-Sophie Berger, Adrian Buschmann, Lilli Thiessen and Marcin Zarzeka. The curators (who run the salon project Fanny, Berta in Vienna) have observed that many contemporary artists, as well as the art audience in general, often seem emotionally detached from the experience of art. Hoping to find otherwise, they asked these four artists to address the title’s question. Their answers, which include works that demonstrate sincerity, seduction, humor and wit, reveal that love has a lot to do with it.

Anna-Sophie Berger (born Vienna, 1989) incorporates fashion and merchandising into her practice. She has developed a brand called Just feel in order to investigate the seemingly limitless boundaries of the contemporary brand as it affects economic and cultural values. She earned an MFA in the Fashion Department from the University of Applied Arts, Vienna in 2013. Her most recent solo exhibition was at JTT in New York in January 2014.

Adrian Buschmann (born Kattowitz, Poland, 1976) creates paintings that alternate between abstraction and representation while conflating styles from different eras with ironic comments on the contemporary art scene. Buschmann holds a degree from the Berlin University of the Arts and has exhibited internationally since 2006. In 2013, he won the Strabag Artaward International.

Lilli Thiessen (born Hamburg, 1983) creates works that incorporate dripped paint, finger-painting and collage while replicating the digital motions common to the use of touch screen devices. Thiessen earned a degree from the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna in 2010 and serves as the art director for the publication, EINE. She had a solo exhibition at HHDM in Vienna in October 2013.

Marcin Zarzeka (born Elblag, Poland, 1985) creates constructions made of glass, plaster, Styrofoam and other building materials that can leave extremely subtle traces. The nuances of each work, invisible online, require the viewer to experience the work in person and up close. Zarzeka was educated at both the Academy of Fine Arts in Wroclaw, Poland and Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. He was awarded the first prize in contemporary art from Augarten Contemporary, Vienna in 2008. He will present a solo booth at VIENNAFAIR with Dawid Radziszewski Gallery in October 2014.
